National Mall Story Walk

A self-guided Washington story walk beginning at the Washington Monument and moving along the National Mall past monuments, memorials, and museums.

Stop 1 — Washington Monument

Welcome to the Washington Monument on the National Mall. You’re standing at the tall stone obelisk that anchors the east–west axis of the capital’s memorial landscape. This preview introduces the style of the full tour: local context, a clear walking cue, and a story you can take in at your own pace.

Walk cue: Walk west, downhill, toward the Lincoln Memorial at the far end of the Mall. Cross 17th Street carefully at the crosswalk. The oval plaza with the fountain and ring of granite pillars is the World War II Memorial. Take your time and stay aware of traffic and current street conditions.
